| | A European award for the best housing projects for the elderly. Taking place in Hungary, Sweden, Spain, the United Kingdom and Italy in the months of December and January, the awards are for the first housing schemes realised according to the criteria set by the WEL HOPS project, Welfare Housing policies for Senior Citizens', an initiative coordinated by ERVET (Emilia-Romagna Economic Territorial Valorization - Special Initiatives Unit), in collaboration with five European partners and with the support of the Regional housing and Social policies unit, financed by the European Union within the INTERREG IIIC programme for interregional cooperation.
Begun in April 2005, WEL_HOPS is a three year project which involves five partner countries (Italy, Hungary, the United Kingdom, Sweden and Spain) and represents one of the main initiatives on a European Union level in the field of housing policy for the elderly. The objective is to maintain self sufficiency, the right of choice, the best autonomy and quality of life for elderly people in Europe. Under this approach certain Guidelines for senior citizen house planning have been realised, an operative manual which gathers together specific observations for the planning and construction of new houses or for the restructuring of existing buildings adapted for the needs of people of all ages and in particular for the elderly.
